Atlihuetzia waterfalls
Mystical waterfall and legends in Yauhquemecan
The surroundings are covered with ash trees, ahuehuetes and ferns that create a cool, humid microclimate ideal for family outings and picnics. Visitors can descend to the base of the waterfall via a steep path and feel the spray of the falling water. Guided tours are offered in the area to explore the rock paintings and learn about the region’s history, including tales of the chaneques who guard nature. The waterfall is also a site for ecotourism activities such as rappelling and bird photography and forms part of Yauhquemecan’s tourist circuit along with colonial temples and haciendas in Tlaxcala
Guided tours include stories about the ‘chanes’, magical beings who, according to tradition, guard the waterfall. The mist created by the falling water forms natural rainbows at dawn and dusk, an unmissable spectacle for photographers. Near the waterfall there are camping areas and grills where visitors can enjoy a picnic surrounded by nature.
