Sea of flowers and flavors in the dahlia fields

Huamantla fields Dalias

On the outskirts of Huamantla, Tlaxcala, lies Campo de Dalias Caridad, a 1.5-hectare garden that, between July and August, showcases more than 30 varieties of dahlias—Mexico’s national flower. Visits must be booked in advance and include access to artisanal products made from flowers. Surrounded by mountains, the garden offers views of La Malinche volcano. During the visit, guests can purchase jams, beverages, and desserts made with dahlias, while photographers enjoy capturing a sea of colors under the cool highland breeze. Local farmers share how they care for each bulb and recount the history of the dahlia, which was sacred to Mesoamerican cultures. As visitors walk along the rows, they encounter red, purple, white, and bi-colored blooms, along with butterflies and hummingbirds feeding on the nectar. During the season, floral-arranging workshops and tastings of traditional Huamantla dishes made with petals—such as soups and salads—are also offered.

The field also serves as a venue for professional photo sessions and special events, supporting the local community’s economy. Local growers cultivate the dahlias using traditional methods, carefully tending each plant to ensure flowers of various sizes and vibrant colors. During visits, cultivation techniques and the history of this nationally symbolic flower are explained. Nearby workshops sell derived products such as cosmetics and handicrafts inspired by the flower, while panoramic photographs remain a favorite souvenir for travelers.
