Geological enigma and adventure in Sanctórum

The hollow of Sanctórum

The rim of the hole in Tlaxcala offers natural overlooks from which you can appreciate the crater’s magnitude and the xerophilous vegetation around it. Local guides organize rappelling descents that allow visitors to observe the geological layers of the walls and the variety of insects and reptiles living there. Inside there are small caves explored by spelunkers where fossils have been found. The community keeps alive the legend of the devil who emerges from the hole and every year performs cleansing rituals to ward off bad energies. Nearby you can also enjoy typical food during Sanctórum’s patronal festivities. The walk down to the bottom of La Hoyanca allows you to discover cacti, mosses and ferns adapted to its microclimate.

Local guides tell legends of apparitions and tests of bravery while showing rock paintings on the crater walls. The community of Sanctórum promotes astrotourism activities, taking advantage of the clear skies for stargazing.
