Firefly Sanctuary

In the municipalities of Nanacamilpa and Calpulalpan, Tlaxcala, an unforgettable natural spectacle is experienced every summer: the sighting of fireflies in their natural habitat.

Between the months of June and August, thousands of these insects illuminate the forests during their mating ritual, creating a landscape that looks like something out of a dream.

The Firefly Sanctuary is one of the most important ecotourism destinations in Mexico, and its conservation depends largely on the responsible behavior of its visitors. To protect this species and its ecosystem, it is essential to respect the following rules:

  • Do not use repellents, flashlights, cell phones, flash cameras, or reflective clothing.

  • Do not consume food, alcoholic beverages, smoke or light fires.

  • Do not bring pets or litter.

  • Do not camp outside authorized areas or touch fireflies.

  • Do not remove plants or animals.

  • Buses are not allowed in the viewing areas.

Access to the sanctuary begins at 7 p.m. and viewing begins around 8 p.m. It is recommended to wear dark clothes, appropriate footwear, warm clothes and a raincoat, since the weather is usually humid and cool.

This season attracts thousands of people every year. If you plan to visit, make your reservation in advance and choose certified ecotourism centers. Enjoying this phenomenon is a privilege; preserving it is a shared responsibility.
