San Juan Teitipac, Oaxaca

The beautiful town of San Juan Teitpac belongs to the Tlacolula District of Matamoros, in the Central Valleys of Oaxaca, approximately one hour from the Oaxacan capital. Its name honors San Juan Bautista, while Teitipac comes from a word of Zapotec origin that means "On top of the stone." In ancient times, this place was known as Zetobaa, a name that can be interpreted as “Another Sepulcher.” According to tradition, this settlement had great relevance within the Zapotec culture, since it was chosen as the residence of priests recognized for their wisdom and extensive knowledge of the rites and ceremonies dedicated to their deities.

This population is recognized for the artisanal production of stone metates and molcajetes, a tradition that has been passed down from generation to generation and is an essential part of its cultural identity.
