Oaxaca City

The capital city of Oaxaca has been a meeting place of cultures since the most ancient times. Today\'s capital is the heir to the legacies of the great cities of Mitla and Monte Alban. Only the ruins of those ancient civilizations are visible today, but their influence is everywhere. To experience Oaxaca, rich in culture and tradition, is to be a part of those civilizations and one that is very much a part of our world today.

The city of Oaxaca is one of the most important destinations for visitors and tourism is the most important industry in the city. People come for the striking landscapes of the Oaxaca Valley, and as much as anything for the architecture and culture of the central city streets.

The city center is recognized by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site for the treasure trove of historic buildings and monuments. But people come even more during  Holy Week, the summer Guelaguetza season (that\'s a month long celebration of Oaxacan dance) and at New Years.

But people come year round for the churches, the museums, to walk the Zocalo and the historic districts and to visit the city\'s many galleries, cafes, and eateries. All of the markets are important. But likewise are the many neighborhoods and meeting points.

The capital is the central distribution point for all of the state\'s incredibly strong artisan traditions. Each of Oaxaca\'s seven principle regions offer something unique, and utterly original. This is represented in the Guelaguetza dance series too.

We\'ve tried to include a little bit of information on the many places to visit here, but of course, your best option is to visit in person.
