Actopan

The capital of Mexico's best loved mango producing region, it's a countryside of waterfalls, deep jungles and important little towns as welcoming as any in Veracruz.

Actopan

Actopan is a little town some 60 kms to the east of the state capital of Veracruz. Best known as Mexico's premier mango producing region, the little town is the seat of a relatively big agricultural and coastal region. It's visited today more than anything for the whitewater river that cuts down one side of the scenic valley. Simply to arrive here, you'll already have glimpsed the waterfalls, rapids, and stirring canyons that make the region famous. It's an adventure destination, but also one with a strong small town vibe and soaring mountains and jungles to make you feel you're somewhere really exotic. The town itself boasts a number of hotels, and other lodging, including a few with extensive outdoor amenities.

But in a landscape and climate like this, it almost goes without saying. Those lucky enough to visit will take off for the Cascada Xoltepec, and the town of Xoltepec itself. The canyon is spectacular, and a number of groups will get you onto a raft to zip right through it. The El Descabezadero falls are a little closer to the town, and purport to be the source of the Actopan River. But the turquoise pools and relaxing shady areas are more the speed for most adventurers. The river is still a magnificent place for rafting, kayaking, and bird watching, and plenty of people won't mind camping out right here on the banks.

Other nearby towns include Coyolillo which still holds one of Mexico's oldest carnivals every March. There's a strong mix of Afro-Mexican tradition in the dances, animal masks, and costumes. The surrounding country is a favorite for families and rustic travelers looking for little cabins and rural inns and all kinds of adventures seem to wait around every corner.

Actopan is a bit less than two hours drive from the Port of Veracruz. Some bus lines will insist on going only so far as Rinconada, although there are combi services after that. Most guests will likely arrive from Xalapa, and trips from Mexico City are not at all uncommon. That more formidable trip takes about five hours from beginning to end.
