Catedral Basílica de Zacatecas

The surprising old seat of the local Catholic church offers a staggering and even inspiring contemporary art interpretation based on some very old themes and techniques.

Catedral Basílica de Zacatecas

The Zacatecas Cathedral Basilica is both the seat of the Dioceses of Zacatecas (since 1863) and one that was, unusually, granted the status of Basilica in 1959. The cathedral parish has stood here since 1568. Dedicated to the Virgin of the Assumption, it's thus also known as the Zacatecas Cathedral of the Assumption. People visit today not just for religious practice but because the cathedral stands at the center of a great regional culture, and it's replete with stunning works of art in the crowning achievement of 18th century architecture.

The church began in 1568 with a small local church. In 1625, this was replaced with a second structure that lasted until 1752 when the present church was begun. It was finally consecrated in 1841 and only finally completed in 1904. The complex we visit today covers some 2,000 square meters and and stand, at its tallest, at 45 meters. There are three naves and a sacristy on an east-west Latin cross plan. There are no fewer than three facades: The Portal of Glory is dedicated to the Eucharist and symbolizes the Last Supper. That on the north, on the main Plaza de Armas, is dedicated to the Passion of Christ. The south facade, on the little street of Candelario Huizar, is dedicated to the Lady of Patronage. That on the north, on the main Plaza de Armas, is dedicated to the Passion of Christ.

This south facade used to give way to the Plaza Mayor,  but today it allows access to the fantastic González Ortega market.  But inside, there is still much to explore. The new altarpiece features incredible figures by artist, Javier Marín. 11 figures are arranged over a scaffold of Dutch birch in a composition completed and dedicated in 2010.

The Cathedral Basilica complex is at the center of the district recognized by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site. A visit is essential for first-timers to Zacatecas, but it's a place that residents and long time Zacatecas devotees will return to again and again. It's also close to everything important in the city, and a fascinating mix of old and new.
