The art of leather working is a tradition with deep roots in Tabasco. Participants are invited to participate in the creation of a whole variety of leather goods, exploring the textures and types of leather used.Differences between materials, techniques, and finishes are highlighted, enriching an understanding of the craft and a hands-on workshop lets visitors design and craft a bracelet, using specialized tools and applying traditional techniques.

The experience lets visitors create a unique souvenir and begin to understand the value added by craftsman, and the skills necessary for each work. The Moreno family are the proud heirs of the practice and put their years of skill into everything on view during the workshop. Visitors receive a personalized leather pin as a symbol of identity within the workshop and Pepe Moreno shares the historical background of leather working, explaining its arrival and practice in Mexico.

The shop currently sells specializes in sandals and huaraches, belts, handbags, leather stamping, conditioning and restorations, although practically anything in leather will be considered. The talabarteria in the name of the shop refers to the family tradition of making and selling talabartes, holsters, knife and sword sheaths, and similar accouterments attached to leather belts and lanyards. Huaraches, of course, are the leather sandals from which the food items take their name.

The workshop concludes with a souvenir photograph to display any creations made. And as a grand finale, the tour is complemented with a visit to the some of the rest of the José Ma. Pino Suárez public market, which is a hot bed of craft working, food, cooking, and artisan work of all kinds. Visitors will see much more of the market at the heart of Villahermosa.
