Northeast of the Oaxacan capital, on Proletariado Mexicano Street in the Colonia Volcanes neighborhood, stands a place filled with history and tradition: the Paz Migueles Market. This market is part of a network of neighborhood markets that supply various sectors of the city, offering the public top-quality fruits, vegetables, dairy products, baked goods, and meats. In addition, it features areas for florists, grocery stores, clothing and footwear shops, and decorations.

The market also includes a dining area where visitors can savor exquisite Oaxacan cuisine, such as delicious memelas, tlayudas with tasajo, chorizo or other meats, tamales in a variety of flavors, empanadas, soups, and traditional snacks, all prepared with the homemade touch that defines local gastronomy. You can also enjoy regional sweets like nicuatole, barquillos, gaznates, nenguanitos, and more. The market is open daily from 6:00 AM to 5:00 PM.

A noteworthy fact about this market is that it originated in the 1970s, when a few local vendors began selling various products on the land where the market now stands. Initially, they set up small wooden stalls in limited spaces. It wasn’t until the early 1980s that the State Government, in coordination with the Municipality of Oaxaca de Juárez, responded to the vendors' request and began a project to build a space suited to their needs. In honor of the great support received from the then-governor, the market was named after his wife, Paz Migueles.

More than just a commercial center, Paz Migueles Market is also a cultural and spiritual refuge. Every December 8th, the vendors celebrate the Feast of the Virgin of Juquila, organizing a mass, preparing food, and filling the atmosphere with joy through live music or a traditional brass band. These festivities not only strengthen neighborhood ties but also offer visitors a glimpse into the rich Oaxacan tradition and devotion.
